Text Summary 2: Aristotle

Due in class Mon., Mar. 16.

Write about two pages on the following question. I want you to summarize the author's ideas, without expressing your own opinions.

You may discuss this topic with fellow students, but you must write the summary by yourself.

Question:

Aristotle says that virtues of character arise from habit, not teaching. What does he mean by this? If we are not presently virtuous, then how do we become virtuous? And what practical lessons should we follow as parents, teachers or legislators?

This also raises a familiar problem. If we do not know how to act virtuously, then we cannot become virtuous. But, surely, if we know how to act virtuously, then we are already virtuous! How does Aristotle respond to this criticism?
